2021年3月4日 - 香港大學吳國寶教授數學講座：「遊戲中的數學」

On the 4th March, 2021, we were honoured to have Professor Michael Ng from HKU to conduct the assembly, “Game in Mathematics”, for S3 students. The assembly was conducted face-to-face at the school hall to illustrate the fixed-point theorem through playing cards. To begin with, Professor Ng invited a student to pick a card among 21 random playing cards arranged in a 7x3 formation. Simply by asking 3 questions and rearranging the cards after each question, Professor Ng amazed everyone by guessing the card correctly. While all the students were still puzzled and thought Professor Ng had got lucky, he explained that the card had to be the one that locates in the centre due to the fixed-point theorem. After his detailed explanation of the theorem, students have then understood the rationale behind.

The assembly was such a valuable learning experience that exemplified the close connection between mathematics and our daily lives through an intriguing and interactive activity. It has also provided an opportunity for us to learn beyond the school curriculum and could help us develop the character strengths of curiosity and love of learning.
