27 September 2018 – Shaw Prize Lecture on Mathematical Sciences 2018

As a secondary 4 student, I always wonder what a lecture is like once I enter university. Fortunately, the chance to experience one was given to me when the school organized an event for the M1 and M2 students to attend the Shaw Prize Lecture on Mathematical Sciences 2018, a special ceremony to honor individuals who have achieved significant breakthroughs.

The Shaw Prize Lecture was held at The University of Hong Kong, a fitting place for such a grand award ceremony. Unsurprisingly, many university students stayed attentive during the lecture, hoping to enrich themselves in the same way we did. As the speaker explained partial differential equations and his theory of regularity for nonlinear equations, we felt as if we had entered a new realm, one of a combination of logic and creativity, where the only limit is your imagination.

Listening to the lecture, I was overwhelmed with the thinking processes, effort and time that were put into creating those formulae. I hope that in the future, we will be able to contribute to the world of Mathematics just like what Luis A. Caffarelli did.
