25-30 Apr 2024 - Geography field trip to Northern Kyushu
We, along with other S3 and S5 students, joined an overseas field trip to Northern Kyushu, Japan,in late April. Some exciting destinations helping our Geography learning include:
Kitakyushu Eco Town: We have learnt how Kitakyushu suffered from different types of serious pollution brought by industrialization, the development of renewable energy to create a more sustainable future and how the prefecture government solved the problem by enforcing waste management, recycling.
Hotaru no Sato Park: By doing observations and measurements, we explored the ways that the river was modified and the favourable conditions for such a water-friendly park. We witnessed the importance of managing rivers for both the sake of humans and the environment.
Aso Crater: We felt the power of nature and witnessed how the unique landform features bring opportunities to people around Aso Crater. Even though there was traffic congestion, nothing could stop us from going to Aso Crater. We all found climbing up the Crater worth it.
Hirai Tourist Farm and Hakata-Minami Natural Trial Farm: With the NPK soil meters and soil test kit, we conducted experiments to understand how different crops and farming practices affect soil fertility. We were surprised to learn through the experiments that the onion farm has higher soil fertility than the strawberry farm.
Microclimate Study on Kokonoe Yume Otsuribashi, Canal City and Hakata-Minami Natural Trial Farm: By using 3-in-1 Anemometer including temperature, relative humidity and wind speed, we investigated how altitude and land features influence our microclimate and hence our daily life.
Through these experiences, we have gained a deeper understanding of geography and its relevance to our world. We can make use of these experiences to create our sustainable future.
