1-5 November 2021 – English Week

01 - 05 Nov 2021
Academic

The theme for this year’s English Week was “Musical Theatre”. A range of fun activities were organized for students to enjoy, including quizzes, competitions, a movie-viewing, and a much-anticipated costume day!

The week kicked off with Broadway Detectives; students hunted down clues, hidden around campus, to help them guess the names of ten famous musicals. Students submitted their responses, and a prize draw took place on Thursday, which saw Lam Tsz Ching (S1CT), Tavia Wong (S2CF), Corliss Poon (S2CF) and Charmian Wan (S2CF) crowned the winners.

On Tuesday, the Junior Inter-House Spelling Bee created a buzz. House Members revised theatrical terms such as ‘pyrotechnics’, ‘choreography’, and ‘dramaturg’ in preparation for the big event. A valiant effort was made by all, but Suukyi were the champions this time, with an overall score of 440. Great work, Suukyi!

Musical-enthusiasts swarmed to the Drama Room on Wednesday lunchtime to catch a showing of The Greatest Showman, and those who were up for the challenge submitted a review article for a writing competition. S1-S2 students were also invited to compete in a “Finish the Lyrics Quiz” on Thursday, which required them to complete refrains from some of musical theatre’s most well-known hits. Congratulations to Franchesca Chalmers (S2TW), Caitlin Shoaf (S2TW) and Zoe Ho (S1LT) on their win!

A dress-up day took place on Friday, and students suited up as characters from their favorite musicals. Their efforts were outstanding! Characters such as Dorothy (The Wizard of Oz), Phantom (The Phantom of the Opera) and Mary Poppins roamed the campus, and English teachers donned costumes inspired by The Greatest Showman. The week culminated in a flash mob, in which teachers surprised students with a dance they had choreographed to the song This Is Me.

English Week provided students with a range of new, fun opportunities. What will next year’s theme be?
