25 - 27 March 2024 - S5 CSD Trip
S5 students embarked on a Mainland study tour to Shaoguan between the 25th and 27th March 2024.
Shaoguan, with its rich history and vibrant traditions, served as the perfect backdrop for us to dive into the local culture. Hands-on activities included the making of Ai-Ci — an authentic Chinese treat made from mugwort. The fragrance of mugwort filled the air as we joyfully created the delicious treat from scratch, with our teachers joining in the excitement as well!
The visit to History East Street (Bai Nian Dong Jie) was also exciting. Strolling along the streets, students found the fusion of modern amenities and traditional architecture captivating. We were able to witness firsthand how Shaoguan revitalised its heritage while introducing new vendors into the city.
Modern development of Shaoguan has more to offer. Once a mineral-rich city in ancient dynasties, the place has now utilised its natural resources to become a city that has prominent steel production. During our time at the Shaoguan Iron & Steel Corporation, we received guided tours about impressive automated systems of steel-making. It was also remarkable how cherry blossoms were planted all around the facility, enhancing the aesthetics as well as purifying the environment.
A major highlight of the trip would be sightseeing at Mount Danxia, a UNESCO-approved World Heritage Site. Along each trail and every cave, nature unfolded its beauty right in front of our eyes. It was not until reaching the observation deck were we finally greeted by the mesmerising views of the spectacular Danxia red cliffs. The magnificent scenery reminded us of the irreversibility of these landforms, that we should always be aware of the importance of protecting and preserving them.
The excursion to Shaoguan was truly an extraordinary journey. S5 students not only gained insights into the industrial and cultural legacies of Shaoguan, but also witnessed the beauty of Mother Nature. The 3-day trip will forever hold a special place in our hearts, shaping our journey of adventurous learning.
