Pastoral Activity

As students, our learning isn’t only limited to within the school campus. To provide students with an opportunity to extend their learning outside of classrooms, the school had an Excursion Week for students to gain knowledge of different subjects with interactive learning beyond the classroom.

S1 students went to Lake Egret Nature Park to learn about the importance of the mangrove ecosystem. They had the chance to observe different bird species in Hong Kong, as well as building their own natural aquariums to gain a deeper understanding of the mangrove ecosystem. Students also went to Wu Kau Tang to experience bee farming and to plant Chinese medicine herbs with their own hands. They learnt about stream ecology through visiting a natural stream. To gain a deeper understanding of agriculture, S1 students went to Yi O, learning about the basic elements of farming, including the life cycle of rice. Not only did they attempt to make local delicacies, as well as Yi O sauces, but students also had the opportunity to know more about food and agriculture, to have hands-on experience working in the rice field, aiming to sustain the farm.

The S1 Excursion Week provided students with a series of unique opportunities to step out of their comfort zones and gain experience with their own hands and eyes. Through excursions, S1 students also developed better bonds, strengthening their friendships among one another.

The excursion for S1 was held from 25th to 27th March. S1 students were divided into three groups and they went to Lake Egret, Yi O and Wu Kau Tang separately in those three days.

On the first day, students from S1U, S1G and S1C went to Lake Egret located in Tai Po. Once we entered the research center of ISHK, a program instructor from Stream Education gave a talk on some basic information about mangroves, such as the forest structure and also the species of mangrove fishes. We then had the opportunity to recreate a similar natural environment for mangrove fishes in an aquarium. Afterwards, we went to the Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve for bird watching.

On the second day of the excursion, we went to one of the two villages in Yi O. The instructor of this program led some of us to a paddy field, where we learnt how to transplant rice from farmers. After a lunch break, we continued with other activities such as weeding and constructing roads in the villages.

On the last day, we went to a bee farm located in Wu Kau Tang and learnt the types of bees. Students not only got to try extracting honeycomb and tasting organic honey, but they also learnt the structure of rivers and different species of plants in Wu Kau Tang.

The excursion provided students with various learning experiences and developed their personal growth and relationships positively. It also cultivated students' interest in nature and independent thinking.
